Shari and Jamie are American Heart Association-certified instructors with a passion to help our community become a healthier and safer place to live. They believe that every resident plays a role as a team member with our EMS professionals. They want to help create a community where neighbors can rely on each other in moments of greatest need. Shari and Jamie will help equip neighbors with the education, skills, and motivation to be a life saver.

Shari is a Registered Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist in Critical Care. During her career, she has had the privilege to care for patients and families through the turbulent journey of critical illness. She has developed educational materials, such as a preoperative open heart surgery video and numerous disease and treatment-related brochures for the hospital where she worked. Shari created and taught both a critical care nursing course and a post-open heart nursing course for experienced nurses to progress further in their career. She was also a clinical instructor for nursing students at Hawaii Pacific University. Although there are countless in patient experiences that are engraved on her heart, her passion to be a caregiver encompasses every part of her life. She has enjoyed volunteering with the staff at the Riverside Medical Clinic. Shari's nursing experience has allowed her to assist family and friends to care for ill loved ones at home and to support them through the end of life transition. One of the most powerful nursing experiences in her life occurred unexpectedly and lasted just ten minutes. The encounter has influenced Riverside Project Heart and continues to drive this mission today.

Jamie holds undergraduate degrees in Neuroscience and Cellular, Molecular & Developmental Biology from UC Riverside, as well as an MBA in Healthcare Management. She is an educator and business owner in Riverside, and very involved in athletics in the community. With an extensive background in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, she has a passion for helping and developing others. Since her first certification at the age of 9, CPR has held a special place in her heart. Jamie is currently a doctoral candidate at USC, conducting research on interventions to improve out of hospital cardiac arrest survival rates in the City of Riverside. Some of Jamie's and Shari's joint goals that are driven by this research include making Riverside a “Heart Safe” community and implementing CPR/AED/First Aid Certification as a High School Graduation requirement for all students throughout Riverside. As more neighbors are touched, the likelihood that there will be someone nearby to provide aid in a critical time of need will increase! In fact, after first downloading PulsePoint Responder in August prior to the app going live, Jamie received her first PulsePoint notification while at an amusement park in another city that has PulsePoint. She was able to respond during that critical time before EMS came on scene.
It was a beautiful day for a fundraising gala! We arrived at Victoria Club early in the morning to set up for a night of fun and philanthropy. Once everything was perfect, we all left to get ready for the celebration. I sat behind two other cars, patiently waiting for the metal gate to open. Something caught my attention; something was very wrong across the street. I knew someone was in need and my nursing instincts took over. I parked where I was and ran across the street. Once I got there, it was obvious that a man was suffering a life-threatening medical emergency. It was time for CPR. I did my best, as I had many times before in the hospital. But this was not a hospital. It was a front yard- his front yard. I continued CPR, speaking softly to the man and reassuring him that we were there with him. I heard the firetruck pulling up, so I let another bystander perform CPR while I spoke to the paramedics. They took over and did all of the right things with speed and precision. The ambulance arrived and the man was taken away. I did not see him recover before he was placed in the ambulance, so I assumed the worst.
Riverside Project Heart (RPH) was presented to the Riverside Medical Clinic Charitable Foundation, where I served as a member of the Board of Directors. It immediately peaked my interest. As a critical care nurse and an individual who performed CPR out of hospital, I felt drawn to RPH from that first day. Others were committed too. I was told about an ambassador, who survived sudden cardiac arrest. Someone who felt lucky to have been saved by CPR and wanted to make a difference to others. YES. It was the man from the front yard. It took 3 1/2 years to find out the truth that he recovered completely. He had been living a beautiful life with his wonderful family.
Now, Don and I go forward together, side by side with many others who want to make a difference in Riverside. I am extraordinarily lucky to have a partner that is just as passionate as I am about helping our community. Jamie and I know that Riverside can do better and that our neighbors deserve better. We made a commitment as RIVERSIDE HEARTSAVERS and will be
TRAINING NEIGHBORS TO BE LIFE SAVERS. Will you join our mission?
An example of what is possible
Riverside Project Heart is a three-year initiative aimed at improving the survival rate for Riverside residents suffering sudden cardiac arrest. The project not only leverages a partnership between the City of Riverside, Riverside Fire Department, and Riverside Medical Clinic Charitable Foundation, but it relies on the commitment of neighbors throughout Riverside to learn CPR, sign up for the PulsePoint App, and look for AEDs in the community.

Fire Chief Michael Moore has envisioned the addition of an app-based sudden cardiac arrest community notification system to the City of Riverside's arsenal of tools for many years. Thanks to the financial support of the Riverside Medical Clinic Charitable Foundation, PulsePoint App Technology has been integrated into the City of Riverside Computer Aided Dispatch System. PulsePoint will alert CPR-trained, registered responders to an individual in need of assistance in their vicinity. The PulsePoint responder will act as a bridge to EMS care by performing CPR and using an AED, when available.
Improving the survival rate from sudden cardiac arrest will take tens of thousands of PulsePoint responders, so if you know CPR, sign up today! If you don't know CPR, sign up for a class ASAP then join the community of PulsePoint responders.
